The North Central Arkansas District Fair will award the Billy Ray Nix Memorial Scholarship and the NCA District Fair Scholarship to graduating seniors in the seven-county district fair area. Students in Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Sharp, Stone and Van Buren counties who have participated in county, district or state fairs and meet the scholarship criteria are eligible to apply. Scholarship applications are available online at www.ncadistrictfair.org Applications must be received by the NCA District Fair by March 1, 2015

 

Arkansas Natural Resources Commission and the Indep Co. Conservation District wants to remind all owners of Poultry Feeding Operations (PFO) that the annual registration for PFO’s begins January 1, 2015 in accordance with the Arkansas Poultry Feeding Operations Registration Act. Registration dates will run through March 31 and affect any PFO with 2,500 or more confined fowl. Each poulty producer will register their operation through the Indep Co. Conservation District. All persons who withdrew ground water and/or diverted surface water, except for domestic purposes, must report their 2014 usage by March 1, 2015. Act 408 of 1989 provides for the collection of a late registration penalty. Wells and relifts should be registered in the County they are located in.

 

This year’s Colors of the Spectrum event will be a 2 colorful mile fun run/walk and balloon release raising money for the Dennis Developmental Center and Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Autism Wing. It will be held Saturday, April 11th, at 5pm at the Melbourne Walking Trail. Entry is $20, and donations to these foundations above and beyond registration are always accepted and greatly appreciated. Families of individuals on the spectrum have the option of forming teams of 10 or more for a discounted rate. Email colorsofthespectrum@gmail.com for more info on registration. Keller’s Bounce Houses will once again be joining in on the fun with their Kid’s Castle, and Bare Feet and Blue Jeans Photography will be snapping candid’s of the day as well as finish line shots. The event is not timed this year and is strictly a fun run/walk only. No pressure, just tons of colorful fun!

 

North Central Arkansas District fair officials have scheduled the 2015 Spring District Junior Livestock Show for April 2 and 3 at the NCA District Fairgrounds on LaCrosse Road at Melbourne. All entries must be made online at www.ncadistrictfair.org . All entry fees must be paid by the entry deadline and can be mailed to NCA District Fair, PO Box 92, Sturkie, Ar 72578. Review the Spring Show Tabloid that is located on the website to be familiar with the divisions and classes. Persons who do not have access to a computer should contact their local fair office, Vo-Ag Instructor or County Extension Office. Entreis that are not preregistered will not be accepted on check-in day. They offer adult, children, tee, and baby clothing to those in the community who might be in need. Depending on the amount of clothes we have at one time each family/individual can take home one outfit a month. We mainly caring clothing, but we also have toys and some household items. We run off donations so what we have depends on what comes in. We accept clothing, household items, some furniture, and shoes so we asked that all those that have clothing to get rid of that they consider us.

Where: Ozark Folk Center State Park at White Oak Theatre located in the administration building

Musicians wishing to audition for the 2015 season will want to attend one of the upcoming auditions Feb 27 or March 21 at 11am. Musicians should call ahead to schedule an audition time for either day. Performers should come prepared to play at least four songs, three written prior to 1941 as well as song of their choice. The tune of choice can be written after 1941 or can be an original composition. A piano will be available; all others please bring your own instruments. Please note: No microphones or other sound equipment will be used during the auditions. Where: Lyon College, in the Batesville landmark, Brown Chapel

Batesville Community Theatre will hold auditions for this summer’s production of the Broadway blockbuster musical, “Mary Poppins” several different roles will be cast. Recommendedn starting age is 7, but all ages will be considered. (Younger children’s roles, other than Jane and Michael Banks, will be toys and park scenes.) Comfortable clothes are advised and a vocals and dance numbers will be learned during auditions. What: Audition

When: March 21, 2015 11am

Where: Ozark Folk Center State Park at White Oak Theatre located in the administration Building

Musicians should call ahead to schedule an audition time. Performers should come prepared to play at least four songs, three written prior to 1941 as well as song of their choice. The tune of choice can be written after 1941 or can be an original composition. A piano will be available; all others please bring your own instruments. Please note: no microphones or other sound equipment will be used during the auditions. This is open and free to the public. The first hour of each evening will be an open community dance and provides a great opportunity for those interested in learning the skills and techniques of traditional Ozark squares. The second hour will focus on current Ozark Folk Center dancers as they practice and rehearse routines for the upcoming season. There are open positions in the OFC Dance Department for dance callers and single male dancers. As with any winter event, weather issues may cause cancellation. Updates concerning weather cancellations other announcements will be available on the OFCSP website under the MUSIC page and linked to Tuesday Night Square Dance.

A new technique in glass designs allows for a wider range of creative flexibility in making wild and complex shapes tat are larger, thinner, off center, free formed and intentionally distorted. The technique will be introduced in this advanced level workshop, taught by the esteemed international glass artist Beau Anderson
