The annual nut sale was a great success. The Independence County Conservation District thanks you for your support and wants to let everyone know they have extra nuts still for sale. If you missed the order period and would like to purchase some of the extras come by the office located at 490 E. College Street, Room 242 Batesville (second floor of the Post Office building). We have a limited amount of the nuts left don’t miss out.

 

The Batesville Optimist Club is once again sponsoring their annual Essay Contest. The contest is open to all area youth 18 and under who are still in high school. This year’s topic is “Optimism should be a Priority”. The winner will receive $100and their essay will be submitted to the District Contest where the winner will receive a $2500 scholarship. 2nd place will receive $50 and 3rd place $25. Thanks to Batesville Physical Therapy for sponsoring the contest. All essays must be turned in no later than Friday February 6th. United Way of Indep. County seeks to hire a proven leader as its executive director. A Bachelor’s Degree or equal experience in a related field is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess a working knowledge of fundraising, volunteer recruitment, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access, QuickBooks, and donations software. Candidates must be able to effectively build relationships with other community organizations and the business community to aggressively promote the United Way and its mission. The ideal candidate must work effectively with a volunteer board of directors, office staff, community partners, and United Way funded agencies. We run off donations so what we have depends on what comes in. We accept clothing, household items, some furniture, and shoes so we asked that all those that have clothing to get rid of that they consider us.

Where: 1 Allen Chapel Rd, Batesville

If you are retired and want to stay active or you would just like to serve your community, consider becoming a Certified Volunteer Ombudsman. Spending just 2-4 hours per week, Ombudsman can greatly enrich the lives of elderly residents in long term care facilities who may not have the support of family or friends. For info call Maxine or Charlotte at the White River Area Agency on Aging 800-382-3205, 870-612-3041, or 870-612-3037. WRAAA will host a free training class on the Ombudsman Program. If you are not aware of the role an Ombudsman plays in the life of a nursing home resident, you will find this class very informative. This classroom training is also the first step toward becoming a certified volunteer ombudsman.

10-12 is Whisk Broom Workshop-Before vacuums were invented brooms were the only way to clean the floors in your home. The deadline to register is Jan 23, $20 per person. 1-4 is the Beginners Crochet Workshop-the art of crocheting has been practiced for hundreds of years. Sign up for this workshop and learn the basic skills of crocheting with the Ozark Folk Center craft director, Jeanette Larson. The deadline to register is Jan 29; admission is $10 per person.
