The Batesville Optimist Club is once again sponsoring their annual Essay Contest. The contest is open to all area youth 18 and under who are still in high school. This year’s topic is “Optimism should be a Priority”. The winner will receive $100and their essay will be submitted to the District Contest where the winner will receive a $2500 scholarship. 2nd place will receive $50 and 3rd place $25. Thanks to Batesville Physical Therapy for sponsoring the contest. All essays must be turned in no later than Friday February 6th. Donations will be greatly appreciated for the Butterfly Ranch in Swifton, you can drop the donation off at WRD Entertainment to Lisa Bray and she will go to Sam’s and get supplies that the house is in need of, any amount will help $5 goes along way for them. Thank you for your support

The North Central Arkansas District Fair will award the Billy Ray Nix Memorial Scholarship and the NCA District Fair Scholarship to graduating seniors in the seven-county district fair area. Students in Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Sharp, Stone and Van Buren counties who have participated in county, district or state fairs and meet the scholarship criteria are eligible to apply. Spending just 2-4 hours per week, Ombudsman can greatly enrich the lives of elderly residents in long term care facilities who may not have the support of family or friends. For info call Maxine or Charlotte at the White River Area Agency on Aging 800-382-3205, 870-612-3041, or 870-612-3037. WRAAA will host a free training class on the Ombudsman Program. If you are not aware of the role an Ombudsman plays in the life of a nursing home resident, you will find this class very informative. This classroom training is also the first step toward becoming a certified volunteer ombudsman.

The Lyon College Convocations Committee will present Scott W. Johnson at the 2014-2015 Patterson Lecture. Johnson’s presentation is “Rathergate Ten Years After”. The lecture is free and open to the public. He is cofounder of, and contributor to the website Power Line, which was named Time Magazine’s first and only blog of the year in Dec. 2004 for its role in exposing the CBS 60 Minutes Rathergate fraud regarding President Bush’s service in the Air National Guard.

Where: Batesville Area Arts Council Gallery

Classes will be held every Tues. and Thurs. on 226 E Main Batesville. The hour long sessions will be led by RYT200 certified yoga instructor Marnie Davis. Beginners are welcome. Please bring your own yoga mat if possible. Pre-registration is not required for these sessions. Please bring your yoga session fee of $10 to each class. What: Clothes of Care

Where: North Heights Church of Christ Batesville, above the fairgrounds

They offer adult, children, tee, and baby clothing to those in the community who might be in need. Depending on the amount of clothes we have at one time each family/individual can take home one outfit a month. We mainly caring clothing, but we also have toys and some household items. We run off donations so what we have depends on what comes in. We accept clothing, household items, some furniture, and shoes so we asked that all those that have clothing to get rid of that they consider us.

The second hour will focus on current Ozark Folk Center dancers as they practice and rehearse routines for the upcoming season. There are open positions in the OFC Dance Department for dance callers and single male dancers. As with any winter event, weather issues may cause cancellation.
