 This year’s Colors of the Spectrum event will be a 2 colorful mile fun run/walk and balloon release raising money for the Dennis Developmental Center and Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Autism Wing. It will be held Saturday, April 11th, at 5pm at the Melbourne Walking Trail. Entry is $20, and donations to these foundations above and beyond registration are always accepted and greatly appreciated. Families of individuals on the spectrum have the option of forming teams of 10 or more for a discounted rate. Email colorsofthespectrum@gmail.com for more info on registration. Keller’s Bounce Houses will once again be joining in on the fun with their Kid’s Castle, and Bare Feet and Blue Jeans Photography will be snapping candid’s of the day as well as finish line shots. The event is not timed this year and is strictly a fun run/walk only. No pressure, just tons of colorful fun!

 

Registration is open for “Reading is a Superpower” the Ozark Foothills Literacy Project’s 2015 Summer Reading Camp for 6-12 years old. The camp is set for June 15-18, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 615 E. Main Street in Batesville. The camp will offer a fast paced morning of engaging reading and writing activities with a focus on heroes and their stories. Activities will include story time, a superhero obstacle course, reader’s theater, creative writing, recipe reading to make super snacks, word games, and more. The camp will be led by certified teachers, including Literacy Project board members Ann Walmsley and Julie Reardon.  Registration fees are $99 until May 15, plus $75 for each additional sibling. An account has been set up at Centennial Bank in Batesville for Wade Cooley of Mount Pleasant. Cooley, a married father of four, recently underwent brain surgery. Self-employed in the lumber business, Cooley will not be able to work for the foreseeable future.

 

 

Benefit raffell is being held for Vanessa Cherry (18 Daughter of Mary Ann and Dan Clem) and a SR. at Batesville High School, who was severely injured in an automobile accident on March 1, 2015. She is currently in Timber Ridge Rehab Center in Benton, AR for traumatic brain injury. A 30 quart Hopper Portable Yeti cooler valued at $349.99, donated by Cup’d Up Outdoors, is being raffled. This is open and free to the public. The first hour of each evening will be an open community dance and provides a great opportunity for those interested in learning the skills and techniques of traditional Ozark squares. The second hour will focus on current Ozark Folk Center dancers as they practice and rehearse routines for the upcoming season. There are open positions in the OFC Dance Department for dance callers and single male dancers. As with any winter event, weather issues may cause cancellation. The closing of Riverbank Road may be extended if inclement weather prolongs the construction process.

Where: Eagle Mountain Golf Club

The Lyon College football program fundraiser with proceeds going back into the program which will field its first intercollegiate squad since 1951 in August. It will be a 4-man scramble, with teams playing the best ball on each hole. A maximum of 25 teams will play on the links. The cost to play is $100 per person, or $400 per foursome. Lunch will be provided for participants by Citizen’s Bank. Teams will have a cart to drive during the event.  Lyon football players will be available throughout the course at the pins and help load and unload bags, if needed. All participants will also receive a voucher to attend all six home Lyon games of the inaugural Lyon season in the fall (a $30 value), along with a Lyon football cap. Golfers will be recipients of other gifts donated by area businesses.

The goal is to collect 2,500 pairs of shoes to earn $1000. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes, sandals, boots, etc., at the Bargain Hound Boutique (Tuesday through Saturday) at 228 Ramsey Street in Batesville. What: Lil Bit Olympics

When: May 30, 2015 10

Where: Pioneer Stadium Batesville

The cost is $10 per child (boys and girls) ages 5-12. Events: long jump, soft ball throw, 50m dash (5-6 yr olds), 100m dash (7-10yr olds), 200m dash (5-10yr old), 400m dash (5-10yr olds), 800m run (5-1-yrs old), Dad 100m dash, and a mom and dad 200 relay. Athletes can enter and run one or all events. Introductions will be made before each race and displayed on the video board at Pioneer Stadium. Live broadcast on the Cube. com as well. Pioneer varsity cheerleaders will present ribbons after each race. Legends of Track will be there for an autograph session.

UACCB will offer a free half-day camp for students interested in the growing field of cyber security. Students entering grades 8 and 9 in the fall of 2015 are eligible to attend. The camp includes activities focused on cyber security topics: the interconnections of security, technology and computers; basic concepts of Alice computer programming; PC hardware repair; password recovery; and war walking activities. What: Basic Outdoor Survival

When: September 26, 2015 9-12:30

Where: UACCB Nursing Allied Health Building, Room 902

 Dan Nash, a professional mountain guide, will teach phase one of survival training. Training includes instruction on survival kits, the psychology of survival, shelter, water, fire and preparation for rescue. Classroom and field exercises include fire starting, water filtration and shelter construction. Bring a water bottle or container, two bandanas and a steel or magnesium fire striker. Field exercises to be held outdoors, rain or shine. Up to two minors (under 18) may attend the class for $5 each but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years of age with a fee of $32. What: Intermediate Survival

Where: UACCB Nursing Allied Health Building, room 902

Dan Nash, a professional mountain guide, will teach phase two of survival training. Training and field exercises include an overview of the Basic Survival Class followed by instruction in wilderness first-aid, orienteering, collecting wild edibles, the use of snares, dead falls, fish traps and surviving harsh weather environments. Adults (18 and up) need to bring a pocket knife and three feet of string. Field exercises to be held outdoors, rain or shine. Up to two minors (under 18) may attend the class for $5 each but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years of age with a fee of $32.
