Arkansas Hospice seeking volunteers in independence and Jackson counties to help care for patients. Searcy Children’s Homes is a faith based agency which began in 1974. Since that time, the Home has cared for more than 1,000 children in need of help. The need is far greater than what we can provide. Each month over 300 children are removed from their homes-statewide. Searcy Children’s Homes is quite clear-The home is committed to “Planting Seeds of Hope” in children and families and providing the tools for spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth. Kenli Johnson was diagnosed at 4 weeks old with Retinoblastoma (eye cancer) in both eyes. When diagnosed her right eye was already consumed over 50% with an aggressive tumor. It has completely detached her retina and has now been removed. The wonderful team at St.Jude is trying to save her left eye with hope to save some of the vision. She will be living at St. Jude for the next 8-12 months while she fights this terrible disease. Her parents are Tyler and Lyndsey (Ireland) Johnson. Her sissy is Kambri. She is 2 yrs old and her biggest fan. While St. Jude may provide housing and a lot of great benefits, they still have a home and bills to pay. Lyndsey is a stay at home mom and Tyler travels all over the us doing pipeline. He is not able to travel at this time so that he can be there for Kenli and his family during this terrible time. The show is part of the annual Grandpa Jones Weekend which features old time banjo workshops and contests as well as performances by Mike snider on Friday evening and Ramona Jones and the Family Band, both Friday and Saturday nights. Riders in the Sky tickets go on sale June 15 with all seats in the auditorium being reserved seating. The premium reserved seats are $20 and the reserved are $15. Bill is widely known for large scale public monument portraits, which include Elvis, Faulkner, and BB King. His work has been exhibited in the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Museum. His workshop will be based on classical modeling techniques for figurative sculpture. Students will model a human head from life, using water-based clay. You will develop skills of accurate observation; learn anatomical proportions, bone and muscle structure, and gain an understanding of expression. Create patterns and colors on copper with a torch by controlling the shape and heat of the flame. You will learn to anticipate color changes, to layer colors and to apply these techniques to their own design. During the course, you will complete several flame colored copper projects and will leave with a procedures manual and equipment list so they can set up their own home studio. What: Memorial Trap Tournament for Zach “ Kern” Lillard

Where: Paul H. “Rocky” Willmuth Shooting Sports Complex

Lillard, a member of the Lyon College Trap Team, died June 6 in a canoeing accident. “Kern was one of our best shooters, one of our best friends, someone you were guaranteed to have a good time with, and a true blessing to his family, friends and community. I intend for this to become an annual event in his memory and hope future generations of students may benefit from the scholarship fund in Zach’s name, “  said Landon Downing, assistant director of admissions and the team’s coordinator. Practice round will begin at 9 am and the competition will kick off at 10. This is an individual style tournament with 2 flights.  The registration fee for the tournament is $75, which includes a meal. Hawg’s, owned by Lillard’s family, will provide barbeque. Plates will be for sale for $10 to those not competing. Spectators may attend for free, but donations would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made to the Zachary Kern Lillard Scholarship Fund at Citizens Bank in Batesville. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the scholarship fund.

Braiding is a traditional craft in many cultures. Braids can be used in many applications, from jewelry (cord or beaded) to accessories, to home décor. In this workshop yu will work with both hand-held disks and marudai (braiding stools). Everyone will start with a sampler braid and choose a pattern for a small project-bracelet or keychain.  Dan Nash, a professional mountain guide, will teach phase one of survival training. Training includes instruction on survival kits, the psychology of survival, shelter, water, fire and preparation for rescue. Classroom and field exercises include fire starting, water filtration and shelter construction. Bring a water bottle or container, two bandanas and a steel or magnesium fire striker. Field exercises to be held outdoors, rain or shine. Up to two minors (under 18) may attend the class for $5 each but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years of age with a fee of $32. Dan Nash, a professional mountain guide, will teach phase two of survival training. Training and field exercises include an overview of the Basic Survival Class followed by instruction in wilderness first-aid, orienteering, collecting wild edibles, the use of snares, dead falls, fish traps and surviving harsh weather environments. Adults (18 and up) need to bring a pocket knife and three feet of string. Field exercises to be held outdoors, rain or shine. Up to two minors (under 18) may attend the class for $5 each but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years of age with a fee of $32.
